Examples of inappropriate use of hypnosis

Hypnosis can be a useful tool when practiced ethically, with informed consent, appropriate training, and clear professional boundaries. However, its misuse can create psychological, physical, and ethical risks, particularly when it is presented as a substitute for medical care, used to pressure or manipulate someone, or applied without adequate consideration of a person’s vulnerability and circumstances. This article examines examples of inappropriate hypnosis, including coercive demonstrations, unsupported therapeutic claims, violations of confidentiality, and techniques used outside a practitioner’s competence.
